The Sexy Six +

The Sexy Six are a group of six waitresses who have been let go from their jobs as waitresses at a nearby restraurant. I'm really not sure what to think about this. In one respect, I'm offended that weight has to do with how well you can perform a task, but on the other hand, I wonder how overweight people can perform certain tasks.

America's Largest Waterpark

Yesterday, I went to Noah's Ark. My wife and I took our oldest daughter, Elizabeth for a Mommy, Daddy and Me day. I had a great time going down water slides and strolling down the lazy rivers, but today I am feeling "it." "It" is the feeling of overdoing something and being so sore as it hurts to move. Today, my knees, my backside, my back, my shoulders and most of the rest of my body is feeling the effects of "it." My wife and I had not been to Noah's Ark for 5 years, since we were a little busy for some reason. But this year, we decided to take Elizabeth since she is now 48 inches, the magic height for most rides. It was the first day in over a year that I did not wear a pedometer as I knew I'd be in the water a lot. Seeing that most of the rides have several stories of stairs to walk up, I'm sure I had no problem hitting 10,000. Elizabeth wanted to slide down the same slide about 10 times in a row and have races to the bottom and I hate losing so I did it each time.

It also marked the first time in several, SEVERAL, years that I went without a shirt in public. In the past, I would have worn a shirt all day to cover up, but yesterday I made a conscious decision to go without one. I know I still have a way to go before I'll look anywhere near having a "good" body, but I wasn't at all self conscious. I did notice many guys that were wearing shirts and doing the same thing I would have been doing in the past.

I did notice something else at the waterpark too. It is not for "old" people. And today I am feeling old. Not many people past their 30's at the park unless they had a family of kids with them. I would love to go back, but next time I will remember the feeling of "it" and hopefully take it a little easier.

Another Shipment

After so many recommendations about this stuff, I ordered some a while back. Actually, I have gone through the 4 jars within 2 months. When I first tried PB2, I wasn't sure about it as it is all natural without any added flavoring. I use my PB2 mostly as a dip for carrots. I tried it in my oatmeal, but I prefer my JIF to PB2 in oatmeal yet. It had been suggested to me to try adding a TBSP of canola oil to the PB2 instead of water. I hate wasting 2 points on oil everyday and this seemed like a good way to get my healthy oils in. I have tried it on occasion, but still seem to skip the oils most of the time. The website offers many recipes and as I was looking through them recently I came across the "Couldn't Be Easier Pudding". It's 1 box sf/ff chocolate pudding, 2 cups skim milk, and 2 tbsp PB2. Doesn't get much easier than that and chocolate and peanut butter have always been one of my favorite combos.

Next week, I'm off for the week and I may or may not be around as my "Event Planner" has most of my days planned out for me already. Can't wait to find out what's in store!

Challenges

At work lately, I've been noticing that I am doing the same activities over and over. This is a great way to create a set routine, but after a while, doing exercises to "Hoop De Doo" and "Mambo" gets a bit repetitive. Routines are great ways to get into a zone food-wise, but exercise-wise is another story. I have other exercise routines to do at work, just get comfortable with the same 5 songs. So, my goal for next week will be to practice a new exercise routine that I can do with my residents.

As I have already mentioned, I started the push up challenge and I am also going to start my own sit-up challenge to work together with the 100 push-up challenge. You're welcome to try yourself. I am going to use the push-up program and just switch it to sit-ups. Yesterday i started Day 1 of my sit-up challenge. I actually found it much easier to do sit-ups than it is to do push-ups. Today, I will rest from the sit-ups and start Week 2 of the Push-Up Challenge.

Routines are a great way to reach a goal, but now that I am maintaining, I need a bigger challenge. I am amazed at my Sister-In-Law, who just completed a 1/2 triatholon. I'm not quite sure if that is the sort of challenge I am looking for, but I do need something to keep me interested. So after the push up/sit up challenge, I'll be looking for bigger and better challenges.

So, I need to get back to the healthy food routine as today, I snacked on a few too many brownies and peanut butter cookies. On bad thing about Flex is that you can eat these not so healthy foods and still stay with in your points. 2 brownies and 4 peanut butter cookies should not be my lunch on a daily basis. I still got some work to do!

Move More!

I love getting my 10,000 steps in daily. I'm not nearly as obsessive about it now than I was earlier on in my journey. Now, if I still have 1,000 or so to go, I'll let it go while in the past, I would have gone outside and walked around the block till I reached it.

I love riding my elliptical. When I first got it last August, I was riding everyday for at least 45 minutes. Now, I strive for 4 times a week of at least 30 minutes. I have not had a week with less than 4 times yet. I don't wake up early much anymore to do this, since I value every minute of sleep I can get.

That's it! Walking and the elliptical. So while I've been riding so many other bloggers experience with the 100 push up challenge, I thought it was about time to give it a try. My first week is complete and I cannot believe how sore my arms and pecs are. I've been moving, but not these muscles.

Move more! I have a better understanding of this since starting my journey. You don't have to go overboard, but you do have to get some movement in each day. Now, I've added the extra dimension of the push ups and I'll feeling it.

Next step: Who's in for the 100 sit-up challenge??

For Me??

I got an award!

Apparently, my wife doesn't think I have as many friends as she does, since she has challenged me to find 50 friends on Facebook before she does. I'd nominate everyone for this award as every blog I read inspires me, so I'm not going to pass it on. (Need to get back to Facebook to try to rack up a few more friends. My wife has a few more than me right now.)

100 PUSH UP CHALLENGE
I've been reading about Andrew's progress in the 100 push up challenge and decided that I should give it a try. I am now on Day 3, of Week 1 and I'm not sure how far I will get. It is much tougher than I thought. Initially, I did 20 push-ups without difficulty so I thought I'd try starting on the 3rd level. It was fine for the first day, but Day 2 got difficult. I'm going to drop down to the level 2 program and see if I can keep going. Day 3 tomorrow.

Hold Your Horses!

Whoa, horsey!

Eating too fast is a habit that many people have problems with.

You just might be eating too fast when...
*Your family hasn't even sat down at the table and you've already consumed your entire meal.
*When you go for the next bite before you realize it is all gone.
*When in your haste you bite off part of a plastic fork and don't notice it
*When the gravy/sauce/topping is passed around and you're halfway done
*You're scooping up the next forkful with your left hand, before you've put the forkful from your right in your mouth.
*You dreamt about marshmallows and in the morning your pillow was gone!
*You set your hot dog bun on the table, grab the mustard, and 3 minutes later Fido is missing!!

(Taken from the GOAD message board)

I am guilty of eating too fast. I have eaten a whole box of Fiber One Bars on several occasions before considering the consequences. Unfortunately, this has not kept me from buying them. In fact, this week they were on sale once again "10 for $20.00." I hate sales like that. Do I really have to buy 10? Well, if I don't buy 10, I'm not saving nearly as much. I decided to try the kind that has not been available before: Strawberry with Almonds. Of course, I bought another box too.

I bought these Fiber One Bars on Thursday and it is Saturday evening and I have only eaten three. This is a huge improvement over the previous times I have purchased them. In the past, the box has not made it through the first evening. I have savored my "1 a night" and so far, so good. And on top of savoring my Fiber One Bars, I am also practicing my "Don't eat so Fast!" methods.

Some approaches to eating slower that have never worked for me:
Take a sip of water between eat forkful...
Chew your food 20 times before swallowing...
Eat a bite of eat variety of food, instead of inhaling each individual item all at once...
Be mindful of eating slowly...

Anyone else have ways to eat slowly?

Not just the receptionist that covered my behind last week, but EVERYONE! Members, leader, receptionist, Quizno employees (lots of members stop there after they weigh in), plus many others. I still feel horrible, but my WW buddies have forgiven me without too much humiliation.

You Look Different?

Why is it that we are so worried about hurting someone's feelings when mentioning weight? Throughout my year weight loss, I seldom received any comments from people about the way I looked. The people who knew I was losing weight had no problem dishing out compliments. I still have several people mention it on a daily basis now that I am at a healthy weight. Our appearance is a huge part of who we are. I have changed so much over this past year and I do understand why people do not mention it. They don't want to hurt your feelings if you really are not losing weight. They don't want to find out that it's because of an illness and then they would look uninformed about the situation. If you're a woman, it's even more sensative. I would never dream of asking a woman if she were pregnant. It would have to take me actually seeing a baby and then with my luck, I would still be wrong by calling out there age, like "you're too young to be a grandma." A person's weight and age are probably the most private parts of our lives even though it is easy enough to make assumptions on both subjects.

So why is it that I received so many stares and glances and plain strange looks at work today? Why was it so easy for so many people to mention my appearance today? I did something today that I have not done in a long time. In fact, I was probably a normal weight the last time I did this at a work place. I honestly could not believe all the comments and questions I received today. And why was it?

Today, I wore my glasses to work.

Why is it so easy to point out a change such as this, but to discuss our weight is such a sensative situation? Tomorrow, I think I'll put my fat suit on and see if anyone comments!

What to Write Down

There are so many things that seem so important. I try to write as little down as possible, since I know I seem to never look at what I write down once I write it down. Food journals, and diaries are a great tool when used properly.

Do you look back in your journal if you've had a gain for the week? I certainly never did.

Do you write a grocery list out every time you go to the grocery store? I try to, but I always seem to pick up so much more than the milk and bread that usually is the only thing on the list.

What are important things to write down. I'll tell you one very important thing to write down. When you are scheduled to work! I have work a salaried job for so long now that I never "punch" in the morning and never worry about my hours, since I know I always work over 40 hours. So, when I started working for WW and have been begged to sub meetings more than I care to, I thought I could remember it all.

Well, it happened. I forgot! This morning, I woke up franticly hoping that I was subbing the Thursday meetings this week...no such luck. I checked the one place I knew it was written down (in the email that I got sent asking to sub) and unfortunatlely it was last week, July 10! OMG!!!

I was more upset at myself than anything else and the leader/receptionist who happens to be the location coordinator took care of the meeting and actually asked me to sub again instead of getting mad at me.

I have been completely sick to my stomach all day knowing that I totally messed up. Writing things down is definitely a good thing, and believe me, I have written down EVERYTHING today. Some things need to be written down and some things are just not so important. Writing down appointments will be on the top of my list of things to write down from now on.

Lesson learned.

Friday Food Find

Found these at Sam's Club recently. They are very good. 120 calories per serving, 4g fat, and 3g of fiber. They have a great taste, but are different than a chip. They'll called crisps and that's probably a good name. When I first tried them, I was expecting the crunch of a chip, but was surprised by the crisp much like a Funnion or Cheeto type snack. Looking online, they do sell their products from their site, but only in bulk quantities.

Here's to a great weekend. Think I'll try to leave the computer off this weekend as I have spent too much time on it this week voting for the All-Star Game. Glad my efforts paid off.

Journaling

A new study that was discussed at our Weight Watcher meeting this week discusses Journaling. To wrap it up, it states that people that journal/track what they eat without trying to diet consciously lose twice as much weight as those people that do not write anything down. Duh! It's all about the journal. I seldom write anything down anymore, but I know exactly how many points my breakfast and lunch have daily, so really it's only my dinner that I have to worry about. I do count my points out throughout the day and if I miss something, I don't sweat it anymore as I'm not trying to lose weight anymore.

There are so many different ways to journal. Writing down everything you eat, keeping track of how many fruits and veggies you eat, tracking your water intake, journaling about your day, keeping a spreadsheet with daily weights, etc. Honestly, I don't want to have to do any of it for the long haul. I definitely consider blogging part of journaling/tracking as it keeps me accountable to myself and those that find it somewhat interesting to read about others struggles. How instrumental do you think journaling has been to your weightloss journey? I believe that when I was losing consistently, I would not have lost nearly as much or nearly as fast without journaling. I kept track of everything...all my food/points, water, exercise/walking, daily weights, salt intake, etc. Now the only thing I still write down are my daily step totals. Really not necessary anymore, but I do try to average 12,500 steps a day and to see my monthly average hit that mark is motivating.

If you haven't entered my contest yet, don't forget.

Vices

“It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues.”
Abraham Lincoln

Another Meme...I've been tagged by Andrew Here are the rules:

If tagged, write up a short article detailing your biggest health/fitness vice(s).
Link back to whoever tagged you from somewhere within your article.
Tag 4-6 more people by linking to them at the end of your article (and be sure to let them know that they’ve been tagged). I don't get into the whole "tag" thing, since I never really liked the game as a kid (too much running), so you're welcome to try.

I really don't have a health/fitness vice. I biggest vice period would be going out and getting what I want right away. This happened when I had an inkling for an elliptical. I didn't want to save up for it, didn't want to shop around, just wanted to get it. I had found one that I liked and I bought it. I've done this with other things as well including the "Glider" that sits idol in my parents basement. If I want a piece of equipment, I'm going to get it. I have held off so far on free weights since that's something I'm not too excited to start, but when I get the urge, I'm sure I'll have a full blown weight gym in my kid's bedroom;)

Food vices--I have many!! My food vices include anything crunchy, anything chocolaty, really anything sweet. I tend to watch myself much more when I eat something sweet meaning that I have better portion control during meals.

I went to a Weight Watcher meeting as a member tonight. It's the first time since April that I have actually sat through a meeting. Unfortunately, many of my "Back-row" buddies have not been coming and they were not there once again tonight. There are many interesting characters at the meeting however. I weighed in at my lowest, 185. I haven't changed anything that I've been doing, watched a little closer than last month due to my going over goal by a pound last month.

In the Moment

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. And today? Today is a gift. That's why we call it the present.
~Babatunde Olatunji

I am a procrastinator. I love to say, "It can wait till tomorrow!" I have no idea how I came to lose over 80 pounds, but I have a feeling that it was not by saying that. Living in the moment and having a goal in mind is a great motivator. I was reminded of goals by something my hometown Brewers did this week. Our town is a "buzz" with playoff and World Series talk around the water cooler all of a sudden after the acquistion of CC Sabathia. This is not a move that was done for tomorrow, it was done for today.

CC Sabathia is the Brewers player for today.

In weightloss, we tend to focus on the next 5 pounds, the next 10%, 50 pounds, ultimate goal, etc. Seldom do we focus on today and our accomplishments. Today, I am living in the moment as I am so excited that my beloved Brewers have actually taken a step towards "today." What a present! Today, I am recognizing the awesome achievements of all my blogging buddies and message board friends who have lived for today. GO BREWERS GO!!

Don't forget my contest!

Terms of Endearment

I always hated it when anyone called my "Big Guy." I'm not sure what the equivalent for ladies would be, but when I hear Big Guy, it always reminded me that I was too big. I never thought I looked 100 pounds overweight, but when I heard the comment, I felt it. I didn't think it would bother me nearly as much when someone would call me skinny, and I was finally able to hear it today. "Hey Slim!" someone shouted from the distance. I had never met this person before in my life and was definitely not thinking he was referring to me. He was looking for directions within the facility that I work in and had no other way of getting my attention. I really was taken aback and had to do a double-take to realize he was speaking to me. "Hey Slim!" is definitely a term of endearment that has never been used to describe me. I still have not gotten past the point of being called "Big Guy." Even though, I am at a healthy weight now, I still expect people to turn around and yell it as loud as they can, "HEY BIG GUY!" I am so happy to be no longer referred to as the "Big Guy."

Where Do You Sit?

I was at church this morning and started thinking about the correlation between where we sit and our weight loss success. I know I really should be concentrating on the priest, but it's so nice to have that 1:1 time with yourself sometimes. Well anyway, I started thinking about the Weight Watcher meeting room and how there are 3 rows. It seems that those "prove-it-to-me" people sit in the back row. These are the people that are still not quite sure about whether the program will work or not. Ashamed to be there and distrusting. Prove to me that this program will work and I will move closer and start trusting more. This is exactly the spot that I have sat in and still continue to sit in. The back row is where those people that are not quite sure about it yet. Then there's the middle row. It seems the middle row is for those "know-it-all" people that have been in the meetings paying their dues for several years and complaining about not losing weight fast enough. They are comfortable in the meeting and know everyone and how much everyone has lost even if it's not their business. One of the reasons I sit in the back row is because I don't want to become one of these "know-it-alls." Oh, the front row! Does anyone sit in the front row? There are very few people that sit in the front row, but the ones that sit in the front row seem to be those "I'll-do-it-myself" people. These people don't want to have the support of other members and only listen to the leader. They seem to try to lose on their own more than listening to others.

So who are you? Are you a "prove-it-to me", a "know-it-all", or a "I'll-do-it-myself." My guess is that many of us are still in the "prove-it-to me" row even if we are in maintenance. I love the people in my row and won't be moving for a while.

Remember my contest! It ends on the 18th.

A Contest, A Meme, A Anniversary and More

Well, I've been around now for an entire year as of tomorrow: July 4. And to celebrate my year of blogging, I'm having a contest. Because I'm such a fan of Meme's (I say that in my most sarcastic voice), I decided what better way to celebrate than by holding a Meme contest. The prize is "Green." Since we're all trying to go green I've got a cool recyclable green bag full of cool green stuff.

So the contest is simple, leave a comment on this post with 5 things about you. 4 of them need to be true, 1 of them should be fiction. They need not be in any order and you don't even have to tell me which one is false, that will make it even more mysterious. You're welcome to leave a link to your blog or even post it on your blog, but a comment here will help point me in the right direction. Contest will run for two weeks, ending on Friday, July 18.

So here's my list of 5 things you should know about TB:
1. I've lost over 80 pounds on Weight Watchers in less than one year.
2. I never tuck in my shirts.
3. I play 3 different musical instruments: guitar, harp and piano.
4. I love cucumbers and tomatoes, especially raw and in my salad.
5. I have 4 wonderful children and a loving wife of almost 5 years.

And here's the prize (can you guess which one is fiction?):
A green reusable tote bag filled with the following
1. A canister of Green Tea
2. Lots of green money: $1,000,000
3. A pedometer to get you walking and save some green
4. A green reusable water bottle
5. A green braclet/anchor: MAKE THE BETTER CHOICE

Hope you've had as much fun as I have in the past year and I look forward to another great year.

Is Weightloss Selfish?

I'm a winner!

Someone mentioned to me this week that he does not exercise regularly because it takes away from family time. He is also a doctor and knows the good things that exercise does, but still has not gotten into a healthy exercise routine. Exercise does not have to be done all at once and it does not have to entail countless hours at the gym. Walking is a great form of exercise and has suited me well for over a year now.

Is weightloss selfish? If you're exercising in the evening and taking away from "family time" it may be, but my wife would agree that I can be quite the "Couch Grouch" at times and a good half-hour of exercise is sometimes exactly what I need to get me in a better mood.

Eating healthier does not need to be a "loner" activity either. I do tend to eat a little different than the family usually eating more veggies and substituting lowfat cheeses and skipping the sour cream and mayo reaching instead for the mustard. Does this make it selfish? My wife and my kids know how I eat by now and have come to expect it.

Going to WW meetings does take some time and working at them could really suck up some family time. I don't think attending a weekly meeting for half-hour is going to wreck havoc on the family. Again, it's a great way to get out of the house for a few minutes. Honestly, I wish my wife had the same opportunity to get away for awhile each week. Any ideas as to get Mommy a night out weekly?

Weightloss could be categorized as selfish when exercise is done excessively and meals are prepared only for oneself, and meetings and other resources are overly used (ie. blog ;).

My doctor friend also stated that the half-hour to hour a day spent on exercise will not make a big difference in regards to life expectancy. He's probably right, but I would like to think the quality of my life will be greater with the better choices I am making.

Side Note: I got my ring back from the jeweler tonight. I went from a size 13 1/2 down to a size 9 and it fits perfectly. I came home and told my wife that I have my ring. Elizabeth had the quick wits to say, "Daddy, you mean you found your ring on your finger?"
