Who Stole the Punchki?

Tomorrow is "Fat Tuesday." Around these parts, that means, "Punchki Day!" So, if you're thinking that it doesn't look much different than a jelly filled doughnut, you're right. Unfortunately, they will be everywhere I turn tomorrow. In the department office, in the mailroom, in the cafeteria, at choir practice, etc. everywhere I go, punchki's will be present. One of the most famous places to get them is the National Bakery another famous Milwaukee Punchki hideaway is the Polish Center of Wisconsin
.

I will try to be strong and not eat a punchki. I know what they taste like and I don't care for the prune ones at all. The only reason I end up eating them is because of the tradition. Seems that way for birthday cake too. I really didn't need it, but because it's been a tradition I had to stick with it.

It is so interesting to see regional foods...we don't have anything like that here.

You missed the BEST place to get them... My kitchen!!! Kids and I made 6 dozen of them today. Yes, it is a memorable family tradition, dating back to my great grandma, but certainly not a healthly one. In keeping with family tradition, we shared most of them. Kids ran around the neighborhood making "speedy" deliveries. Only part of the tradition we have ditched is the filling, no prunes or anything else. Not a lot of European heritage in the Ozarks so we also feel there is educational value. How do you like that for an excuse?!?!?
Congrats again on all of YOUR accomplishments! Happy Paczki Day!!
