Routines

Yesterday, I made my lunch and stuck it in a bag and put it on top of the stove, which I have been doing for some time now. Unfortunately, yesterday was different than most other work days. My wife had off of school as she is a teacher and our three kids were staying home with her. This meant my whole routine of rushing to remember everything as we run out the door five minutes late was disturbed. I had plenty of time to lounge around and play on the computer, watch the news and eat breakfast before leaving the house in a relaxed state.

I forgot my lunch. The one thing that I had to remember yesterday and there it sat on the stove. I managed alright as there are always salads, soups and plenty of fruit available at our cafeteria. It happened to be "Loaded Nachos" day. How could I pass up nachos? I loaded a bed of lettuce in a bowl topped with tomatoes, a sprinkle of cheese, olives, and one small scoop of taco meat. When I brought my bowl up to the counter, I was reprimanded for not taking the nacho chips. I told the dietary staff that I looked at how many calories were in them and put them back down. One bag of chips had 170 calories, 11 grams of fat, less than a gram of fiber. That wouldn't have been so bad, but each bag was THREE servings. There couldn't have been more than 15 chips total and that was three servings.

I enjoyed my "Loaded Nachos" without the nachos and I felt much better about my choice afterwards. Next week, I will be putting my lunch bag in my work bag instead of leaving it on the stove to forget.

When I began flirting with the idea of doing CORE, I asked Skinny Guy what he normally ate and breakfast was oatmeal a lot. I have adopted oatmeal as my breakfast of choice and love all the variety of ways it can be prepared. I like the whole grain long cooked variety so I cook a lot at once and store it in the fridge for reheating in the microwave in the morning a lot of the time. I love the pumpkin, but my current favorite is the one we've been eating with the harvest fruits...apples, pears, and cranberries with cinnamon and nutmeg.

I have had a lot of trouble with the whole lunch at work problem. I was taking protein bars to work, and they had more calories than a sandwich and I was hungry after eating them anyway.

I started taking peanut butter and jelly sandwiches since they had less calories than the protein bars, but I was hungry anyway. Sometimes I would get a bag of Doritos, and there went the calorie-count.

Lately I have just been trying to skip lunch. I am not sure why, but when I skip lunch it seems to help me in terms of toughing out the diet. Either way, I am hungry.

I suffer from CSR* all the time. In fact, I left my skim milk in the fridge this morning, forgetting to bring it to work.
