Mmmm....This is Good

My 7 yr. old and 4 yr. old went shopping to Sam's Club with me over the weekend. We were looking for healthy snacks to take in their lunches. I stumbled upon a Chex Mix Bar. It looked like gooey deliciousness, so I took a look. To my surprise, it had 130 calories, 3.5g of fat, and 4g of fiber. Not much unlike a Fiber One Bar. We decided to buy them and taste test them in the car on the way home. Of course, Daddy had his down in 2.2 seconds, but the girls savored each gooey delicious bite. My 7 yr. old said, "I'm eating it slow because it tastes so good." And because she said it, my 4 yr. old repeated the same only emphasizing different words and a fight broke out of "Quit Copying Me." Why is it that kids get it? Food that tastes good, should be savored and enjoyed slowly, not scarfed down like you have seen food in days. I am working on it, but apparently as evidenced by my to little food critics, I still have a ways to go.

Also a problem of mine that I'm working on everyday. I try to take a bite and set the fork down, but still if I'm not consciously thinking about it, I'll scarf the bowl of whatever down, without thinking about it!

I am at my best when I make an effort to slow down and enjoy each bite...it's just so hard to pay attention!

Huh, I ate that granola bar in three bites. You mean that is not normal?

Your right, kids just get it in way we do not from time to time.

Well, until I read above comments, I thought maybe it was "just a guy thing" as Mike scarfs down all his food. I can make a "100 kcal" South Beach Diet bar last about 5 minutes...Mike's lucky if it lasts 5 bites!
Eating slowly is still a reason I think I am lucky enough to keep at such a great, healthy weight. I was SO hungry always when preggo though, that I think that helped contribute to that 60# gain...eating so quickly I forgot what I ate and just ate more!

It's definitely a savor each bite kind of thing...not to mention my snacks are usually while chasing down my 9 month old so between each bite the bar/fruit/fork/spoon is set down and picked up...definitely something that helps!

our kids can give us the greatest words of wisdom! I am working on eating slower too so my brain gets the signal ;) I'll have to check out the bars....they sound good.

I used to be amazed at my oldest daughter's response to desserts. She would eat some and then say she was full it was too rich. No matter the portion size, she never finished it. That was when she was only 4 or so. I never understood that habit but I wanted to cultivate it. She still will eat rich foods, but she really has learned some moderation I think. And she's now 12 where it's almost the coolest thing to eat crap. She is trying to turn it around and make it cool to put good things into your body. Love that girl!

All to familiar with the Quit Copying Me screaming clawing fight. Sigh. But they do just get food for the most part. I try to emulate their good habits, too.

Oh definitely! I agree. We can learn how to eat properly from our children before we impose our bad habits on them. IKES!
