I always trim off the end that attached to the tree -it lets me see the direction of the pit. Then slice down along the side of the pit on both sides. Peel that sliver of skin off. Scrape the flesh off the major parts of skin with my teeth and nosh on the pit.
Although that would not work for sharing with others.
