Humility

The words of the young and the old are always honest. I'm not sure when we lose that sense of being honest with people, but it happens sometime. Yesterday, at the nursing home, I was helping a few residents play bingo. I was wearing a blue jean shirt with our nursing home logo on it. Fridays are a dress-down day for wearing nursing home shirts and jeans. I don't have any jeans right now that fit, so it's been a regular day for me. I did decide to wear a logo shirt however. This in itself was a big deal, because I have not been tucking my shirts in. So I did it! I tucked my shirt in yesterday and a mean old bitty asked me about my weight. She said, "I thought you've been losing weight, you still got a good gut on you!" I smiled and said I was still working on it. Luckily, I know this nice lady and she was saying it all in fun and she has dementia. If I saw her today, she wouldn't even remember saying it. Heck, she can't even remember my name, she kept calling me Bob. I reminded her that she had a son with the same name as mine, but I had to remind her every time she called me Bob, which was often. In the meantime, I'll keep working on my "gut" and untuck my shirts once again.

Your little lady calling you Bob reminded me of the joke where a grasshopper goes into a bar and the bartender says, "Hey! Did you know we serve a drink named after you?" to which the grasshopper replied, "You have a drink called Bob?"

HA -- you're looking great! My mom is obsessed with weight -- she's often telling me 'he is sooooooooo fat' or 'she is veeeeeeeery large' -- I've been preparing myself for when she comments on my weight. She never says anything about it, although when I lost the 40 lbs. before she kept saying 'now keep it off, okay?' (like I was planning on gaining it all right back!). I wonder if this is a generational thing -- commenting re: weight? And adding dementia into the scenario -- recipe for disaster! Don't let her comments discourage you! Isn't it strange how we'll remember one negative comment and forget the hundred of positive ones? D

I was assisting one of my residents the other day - and she grabbed my bottom and told me to not lose anymore weight! That she liked me just the way I was. Just when you think they aren't paying attention...
