The Pedometer

This morning while catching up on my BL, I was surprised by the nutritional quiz that involved the editor from Good Housekeeping Mag. The question that intrigued me was the one about people who wear pedometers. It was a multiple choice question that asked how many more steps on average people who wear pedometers walk daily. After five days of wearing my pedometer again, I have to say that their answer of 2000 steps seems a bit low to me. I have checked my pedometer nightly this week and Monday and Tuesday I was at about 7000 steps at 9:00pm. What did I do? Of course, I took my wallet out of my pocket, threw my tennies on, told my wife the exact route I was planning on walking and headed out to get at least 3000 more steps. Why has it taken me so long to realize that my pedometer is a definite motivator. Today was Earth Day and the girls had a Earth Day walk at school in which the whole school grabbed garbage bags and headed towards a nearby park. It was a great walk that helped push my total over 15000 today.

I'm thinking that 2000 steps on average just by wearing a pedometer is pretty close to what I do. I can easily get to 7000-8000, but its the last 2000 that I have to work for. I am so much more conscious of that fact when I wear the pedometer too.

I loved my pedometer when I wore one. Especially the Omron one that I could clip on and wear in my bra. No fighting with waistbands or having the thing fall off. I found that wearing it did motivate me to move more. Unfortunately, all that moving didn't help with the weight loss. 15,000 steps a day on average and nothing.

Wondering if the bodybugg would help motivate me again. Or atleast tell me how many calories I'm actually moving a day.

I love my Omron pedometer. But keep them out of washing machines... :)

The other day I forgot to wear my pedometer for my hour-long walk -- but I put it on when I got home. I was suprised to see that I only had around 3,000 steps after going up & down the stairs, cleaning the house & having a very "busy" day, so the article about 2,000 steps on average doesn't surprise me. Some days if I don't get my walk in I'm only at 5,000 or so by evening! My pedometer is a great motivator. I love it that it keeps track of aerobic steps too and times my walks. I try to improve my times.

Greetings!

PS I thought about you the other day when I heard a song about Mr. Mom -- it's a country song & it's hilarious! About a guy deciding to stay at home while his wife goes to work & how he thought it would be easy -- sitting in his chair, etc. You've probably heard it before, not sure who sings it, but it's hilarious!
