Letting the Scale Dictate Your Mood

I never now what to think when members at Weight Watchers through the normal greeting my way:

Me: "How are you today?"
Member: "I'll let you know in a minute!"

Of course, they all say it with a bit of humor in mind, but really do they?
I had my monthly weigh in on Saturday, the last Saturday of the month.  It was not good! Since it was not good, I did let it get me down food wise the entire day.  I didn't track, I ate way too many snacks and I just plain was mad at the scale!  I went to the gym and worked my tail off for an hour, but proceeded to the grocery store to buy food for dinner and a few extra "I deserve them for exercising" snacks. Nothing horrible, two energy bars and a diet root beer, but after the few snacks I had before hitting the gym, I was not in need of more calories, just a better mood.

I usually am fine about the scale since I know that my weight fluctuates a bunch through out the week, but that ONE official weigh in every month seems to get me worked up.  Not sure if it will ever change, maybe if I ever see positive movement in the right direction.

Happy Monday, raining here again...

Non-Food Rewards

As the "baby" is learning how to go on the big boy potty, we've been once again looking for those non-food rewards for staying dry.  His favorite reward so far has been gum.  Really that's the only one he's been looking forward to.  And when he has to spit the gum out for wetting his pants, he has not been happy.

The other kiddos have been trying to "earn" money to spend in Disney World next month.  This has been an easy reward to work towards.  They're cleaning up after themselves, clearing the table after we eat, brushing their teeth without asking, getting along with each other, etc. to get extra spending money.

Trying to get them all the gym has been a challenge as well.  We've been doing the rewarding with a trip to the park and today our reward was a trip to the library.  What next? Always up for suggestions, but I'll be sticking with the park reward as long as they're happy with that one.

I always struggle with non-food rewards. Even when I was actively losing 80 pounds, I always found it difficult to walk without thinking about what I could eat as a reward after my walk.  I've still found myself on occasion saying to myself that I can't wait to get done exercising so I can eat such and such.  I'm sure it will be a life long struggle to get past, but one I will continue to fight.

Counting calories has been going well, and I've been imposing a "no-in-between-meal-snacking" rule since last Wednesday.  Last night, was the first time I had a snack in the evening and I really didn't need it.  I know it's just a habit that once I break I will be happy I did so.

Portion Control

I hate going to the bathroom at work. Why? Portion control.

There are new soap dispensers that have been installed at my work. Each time, I go to the bathroom, which is often since I drink so much water, I am alloted one squirt of soap foam. I actually cheat and stick my hands under again to get another squirt. Then, I put my hands under the sink and get my alloted "20 seconds" of water. I usually again stick my hands under to get more water. After soaking my hands I reach towards the paper towel and get exactly 12 inches of thin paper towel. Before the paper towel comes out, I automatically reach for more.

After doing this for the past month, this week I decided to follow the guidelines. One squirt of soap, one 20 second washing, and one square foot of paper towel. You know what? My hands were clean and dry afterwards.

Portion control is one of the toughest obstacles I face. I'm definitely a "Bigger is Better" type of person. Deals for me are what drives me: 3 for $1.00 or bulk packages are what I look for. This week, I feasted on Chicken Strips at work. I really only wanted one, but they were 3 for $1.00 and the cafeteria worker would not let me just get one. Of course I ate them since I paid for them. This is definitely my biggest problem area right now and something that I will be focusing more on.

I am glad that my work put in new faucets, soap dispensers and power paper towel dispensers as it got me to think again about portion control.

Hold Your Horses!

Whoa, horsey!

Eating too fast is a habit that many people have problems with.

You just might be eating too fast when...
*Your family hasn't even sat down at the table and you've already consumed your entire meal.
*When you go for the next bite before you realize it is all gone.
*When in your haste you bite off part of a plastic fork and don't notice it
*When the gravy/sauce/topping is passed around and you're halfway done
*You're scooping up the next forkful with your left hand, before you've put the forkful from your right in your mouth.
*You dreamt about marshmallows and in the morning your pillow was gone!
*You set your hot dog bun on the table, grab the mustard, and 3 minutes later Fido is missing!!

(Taken from the GOAD message board)

I am guilty of eating too fast. I have eaten a whole box of Fiber One Bars on several occasions before considering the consequences. Unfortunately, this has not kept me from buying them. In fact, this week they were on sale once again "10 for $20.00." I hate sales like that. Do I really have to buy 10? Well, if I don't buy 10, I'm not saving nearly as much. I decided to try the kind that has not been available before: Strawberry with Almonds. Of course, I bought another box too.

I bought these Fiber One Bars on Thursday and it is Saturday evening and I have only eaten three. This is a huge improvement over the previous times I have purchased them. In the past, the box has not made it through the first evening. I have savored my "1 a night" and so far, so good. And on top of savoring my Fiber One Bars, I am also practicing my "Don't eat so Fast!" methods.

Some approaches to eating slower that have never worked for me:
Take a sip of water between eat forkful...
Chew your food 20 times before swallowing...
Eat a bite of eat variety of food, instead of inhaling each individual item all at once...
Be mindful of eating slowly...

Anyone else have ways to eat slowly?

Terms of Endearment

I always hated it when anyone called my "Big Guy." I'm not sure what the equivalent for ladies would be, but when I hear Big Guy, it always reminded me that I was too big. I never thought I looked 100 pounds overweight, but when I heard the comment, I felt it. I didn't think it would bother me nearly as much when someone would call me skinny, and I was finally able to hear it today. "Hey Slim!" someone shouted from the distance. I had never met this person before in my life and was definitely not thinking he was referring to me. He was looking for directions within the facility that I work in and had no other way of getting my attention. I really was taken aback and had to do a double-take to realize he was speaking to me. "Hey Slim!" is definitely a term of endearment that has never been used to describe me. I still have not gotten past the point of being called "Big Guy." Even though, I am at a healthy weight now, I still expect people to turn around and yell it as loud as they can, "HEY BIG GUY!" I am so happy to be no longer referred to as the "Big Guy."

Pick Your "HARD"

It's hard being overweight. Aches and pains in the knees, in the back. Always being out of breath when walking up the stairs or down the block. Having to shop in the "Big & Tall" section for guys or the "Plus Size" section for gals. Always feeling bloated or stuffed. It's HARD being overweight. I'm sure there are many other "hard's" that I am forgetting.

But it's just as "hard" to be at a healthy weight. It's hard to make good food choices. Portion control and not taking that second helping of Cheesy Potatoes or a second burger. Making a conscious decision to exercise instead of rest. Staying motivated and diligent all the time. Not binging on cookies, chips or candy. It's HARD to be at a healthy weight.

Which one is more difficult? They both have their "hard's" and I for one am going to try to keep with the healthy weight "hard's" as I don't miss the overweight "hard's" at all.

"Nothing Tastes as Good as Thin Feels"

I'm sure you've all heard this quote before and I just have to say that it is just not right. Now that I have been at a healthy weight for the last six months, I've come to really enjoy the special indulgences that I allow myself. Today, my wife made muffins. She made a few special ones for me without the extra brown sugar, but apparently they were too go to pass up for my little 2 yr. old. I didn't care. I ate the ones with the extra brown sugar and I am glad I did. It is something that I don't get everyday. Thin feels good, but food still tastes better. I am changing my tastes for sure, enjoying fruit and veggies a lot more than in the past, but if I had to live on fruit and veggies and never see another frozen custard from Culver's, my life would be much less satisfying.

Food tastes good. I like food. Being thin will never feel as good as tasting something good. Today, I received information about the National Weight Control Registry. I am now eligible since I have maintained a 30 pound loss for a year. I lost my first 30 pounds in early July of last year, so I cheated a bit. The survey was very long and very in depth asking about 200 different foods and how often you eat them, asking about habits both eating habits and exercise habits, asking about family history, and several other questions that are more for statistical purposes. I am looking forward to doing everything I can to remain accountable to myself and being part of the National Weight Control Registry is just another way to stay accountable.

TEAM

Think First, Eat Wisely, Attend Meetings, and Move More. I've been focusing on eating wisely this week. I decided that I have been eating too much for lunch. Since starting WW, I've never really changed how much I eat for lunch. My points have decreased, but my lunches haven't. I had always been eating 10-14 points worth of food for lunch. That's not a big deal when you have 44 points to eat throughout the day. Now, my daily points are 33 and 14 points comes close to half my daily allowance. This week, I decided to subtract a fruit: 2 points. I still get plenty of fruits and veggies in. My lunches this week have been 7-9 points. I'm not feeling hungry and I needed to do it. I never felt full with the 14 point lunches, but never felt hungry either and that's what it's all about: feeling satisfied. I've felt the same with my 7-9 point lunches this week, so I'll be keeping the lower points for lunch so I have more wiggle room in the evening.

I know a lot of my problem has to do with eating when I am tired. This week, I will focus on "Thinking First." Do I really need the popcorn for a snack in the evening, or could I eat a few carrots?

Last night, my wife offered to go to the grocery store as to keep me away from the Fiber One Bars. I told her I'd be alright because they were on sale last week: 5 for $10 and now they're $3.59 a package. No temptation here for this cheapskate.

**Happy Birthday Ms. Caryn~4 yrs. old on Friday the 13th. Same day as Grandma and Grandpa B's Anniversary~Happy Anniversary: 38 yrs?

Time to Fess Up

I weighed in this evening for the first time in almost a month. Had to do it as WW employees are required to submit a weigh in sheet by the 15th of each month. I posted a 6.6 lb. gain. I knew it was coming and was trying to put it off as long as possible. I know what my problem is, I track what I want. I eat until my points are gone and then I snack some more without writing anything down. Thinking that if I don't write it down, it didn't happen. I've had some late night snacking issues especially the last week or two waiting for baby. I've stayed up too late and snacked on good choices, but not good portions. Again, the Fiber One Bars came back to bite me. Two nights in a row I've finished an entire box. You would think by now I should know better than to even buy the darn things. I am snacking especially when I'm tired and sleep has been a luxury item these last two weeks. Doesn't seem to be going to get any better since school is now out for the summer and the kiddos think that means bedtime is now 10:00.

So what's my plan? I will track daily, writing EVERYTHING down or at least keeping track in my head and stopping when I am out of points. I haven't written anything down since reaching lifetime and I know what I usually eat for breakfast and lunch, it's dinner and evening snacks that I need to track. I will also exercise daily once again. I have been ignoring this important aspect, but the last two nights have decided once again that it is important and at 9:15ish, I have hopped on the elliptical. I'm so tired, it really doesn't keep my awake any longer than I would be anyway. Actually, tonight I made a pot of coffee at 9:00 just so I would be awake enough to exercise.

WW 4-way approach involves the acronym: TEAM. T~Think First, E~Eat Wisely, A~Attend Meetings, M~Move More. I know what to do, now I just need to do it.

an·chor (ngkr)

4. Sports
a. An athlete, usually the strongest member of a team, who performs the last stage of a relay race or other competition.

5. An anchorperson.
v. an·chored, an·chor·ing, an·chors
v.tr.

3. To narrate or coordinate (a newscast).
4. To provide or form an anchor store for: Two major stores anchor each end of the shopping mall.
v.intr.
Nautical To drop anchor or lie at anchor.

Anchors can be a great reminder and motivation to reach and maintain a goal. The guys of GOAD are designing a bracelet that says: MAKE THE BETTER CHOICE! It has come to be somewhat of a slogan for the Goadies. Everyday a thread is started by one of the biggest losers stating: What was the better choice you made today? I often try to add something to the thread even if is as small as waking up to exercise or choosing yogurt instead of ice cream. I am looking forward to getting another anchor to go along with the other ones I value so much including my 5 lb. stickers and 10% keychain to go along with the Biggest Loser Keychain I received for Christmas. Anchors can be very helpful as a motivator. So what are some of your anchors?

The Mediterranean Diet

I mentioned last week that I attended the Wisconsin State Alzheimer's Conference. During lunch there has always been a doctor speaking about something to do with the disease. This year, I was pleased to find out that it was food related. Dr. Piero Antuono presented an excellent presentation entitled: "Prevention & Environment in Alzheimer's Disease: The Role of Diet & Nutrition." He started by prefacing the research stating that he was not a dietitian or nutritionist, he just "likes to eat!" Many of the points that he made for preventing Alzheimer's ran along the same lines that the Core menu entails: Fruits, veggies and fish were a common thread throughout his presentation. He cited many studies involving cultures that consume a mostly "Mediterranean Diet." So what is a Mediterranean Diet? It is eating at least 2 meals of fish or seafood per week and limiting processed foods. Sounds like a healthy diet to me. If eating fish and fruits and veggies will help prevent or at least help prevent early symptoms of Alzheimer's, why aren't we all eating this way?

He did mention that some cultures, like our own, do not eat fish regularly. This could be due in part from our environment, which includes price. Fish is expensive and several people do not have the resources to eat fish. He did say that the kind of fish what not as important as the idea that it was fish and included fish oils.

Dr. Antuono also mentioned several super foods in his presentation including all berries, green foods and curry/spices. Eating healthy and staying away from processed foods seems to be the best and easiest way to work towards a healthy memory in the future.

"The Journey Begins with One Step"

Walking has been a huge part of my weight loss journey. Looking back at this winter, I have missed my daily walks. This week, my 3 yr. old asked to go for a walk. I obliged and am so glad that I did. I now remember why I enjoy walking so much. Even when I push the double-stroller with two kids coming with me to search for bunnies or count puppies, it is a relaxing time that I don't have during other parts of the day. I often think about how I could burn so many more calories by riding the elliptical, but when I ride the elliptical, I am always watching the display to see how close to "DONE" I am. When I walk, there is no "DONE." I can walk as far as I want, where ever I want. I am so grateful for the Springtime and happy to be walking once again.

Back to the Super Foods: Blue Foods

Back by popular demand...thanks Katie! Here's another installment of Super Foods. Well, blue M&M's are about as close to blue foods as I had gotten in the past. Blueberries, grapes and plums are packed with antioxidants and phytoflavinoids. They're also high in potassium and vitamin C, making them a favorite on the list of "Super Foods." Not only can they lower your risk of heart disease and cancer, they are also an anti-inflammatory. Inflammation is a key driver of all chronic diseases, so blueberries have a host of benefits. The darker they are, the more anti-oxidants they have.

Reading on the GOAD message board last week, "real foods" were discussed. A regular to the message board mentioned not wanting to eat many "frozen" foods. Well, I agree with not eating many frozen dinners and other frozen treats, but frozen veggies and frozen fruits are fine. In fact, it was brought up that frozen fruit is usually frozen immediately after being picked, which keeps all the vitamins and antioxidants intact. I had never thought about that before, but it makes total sense. It takes a long time to ship the "fresh" fruits and veggies to where ever they are coming from. I have always loved going to the farmer's market as all the fruits and veggies are picked early in the day and brought to the market as fresh as can be.

I bought some frozen blueberries this week, haven't touched them yet, but I will.

On another note, I'm trying to start CORE this week. I have a feeling it may be a one week experiment for now as I'm having a hard time staying away from the junk. 35 points does not go far into a pan of brownies ;)

Super Foods

My workplace has an awesome Wellness Committee. It seems that almost every week we have someone coming in to give us a presentation on something concerning wellness. This month alone, we have had a speaker come and give a Yoga Demonstration, a dance teacher come to speak about the Advantages of Dance, and a nutritionist come to talk to us about Super Foods.

It was this last speaker that got me realizing that I have had to change the way that I eat to be successful. If she would have come and given the same presentation one year ago, I wouldn't have known what any of the foods on her list were. This year, after reading several blogs, articles, books, etc., I have a much better understanding of what I am eating. There were still many foods on her list of "Super Foods" that I have not tried, but more that I have incorporated. So here's the list given to me on Thursday:

"Kale"

"Flax Seeds"

"Broccoli"

"Blue Foods"

"Orange Foods"

"Calcium"

"Nonfat Yogurt"

"Curry and Spice"

"Beans"

The one that stuck out to me, since I work in a Nursing Home, was Curry and Spices. The handouts that we received stated that curry and other spices contain powerful antioxidants that fight inflammation. A recent study from UCLA shows that turmeric might have potent anti-plaque forming effects that could slow, stop, and maybe even reverse Alzheimer's disease. Turmeric in curry powder is also associated with improvements with ulcerative colitis, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, and arthritis. Of the 50 foods highest in antioxidants, 13 were herbs and spices.

Another thing that I have found interesting is that I am not at all bothered by spices and spicy foods any more. I actually prefer a little spice, where previously, I would have eaten most things more bland.

Eat your super foods. I still haven't gotten around to reading 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life, but all the super foods on this list are also in the book.

8 GHG's

I was amazed at all the response to Roni's question of the Week. She asked "What is your breakfast of choice?" Being one of "those" Weight Watcher members that try to get in my 8 Good Healthy Guidelines in daily, I am one of the many that stick with oatmeal. {Whole grains.} I also have been adding canola oil lately. {Oils.} Usually that's it except for a bit of peanut butter {protein} and a splash of sugar free maple syrup. {Limit sugar and alcohol.} Not bad for breakfast to get 4 of 8. I do usually have a fruit snack mid-morning and count that as part of my breakfast too. {At least 5 fruits and veggies.} Don't forget the vitamin {one daily vitamin} along with the 32 oz. WW mug full of water {drink at least 6 8oz. glasses of water.} I could easily add dairy, but what would I eat the rest of the day?

The meeting that I went to over the weekend had a clever way to remember all the healthy guidelines:

1-Vitamin
2-Dairy
3-"W" using pointer, middle and ring finger~Whole grains
4-"For" your health: eat protein
5-Fruits and Vegetables
6-Glasses of water
7-"L" Making an L with pointer and thumb~Limit your sugar and alcohol
8-Last, but not least...oil!

I had really been fine with all of them except the oil. I do not want to spend precious points on oil. I have to admit, since adding oil to my oatmeal, it has made a noticeable difference with my body. Hope you're getting your healthy foods in while still eating what you want.

{{Hoping I don't get busted by the WW police for talking about their guideline, but like I said on the WW message board today, there's no magic potion in there materials}}

100 Best Cities

I heard about the top 100 Best Cities according to Prevention Magazine, to walk in on the news this evening and decided to check the list out for myself. Being from Wisconsin, I checked out the top 10 cities in Wisconsin. Not surprisingly, Milwaukee was not the top of the list. It was #7. Technically, I'm not in Milwaukee, but a suburb that is within walking distance of Milwaukee. I wasn't surprised by the #1 cities in Wisconsin and the criteria did make sense. I love walking in the parks and tend to stay away from residential areas when I'm walking. Check out the list for yourself and see if you agree with it. I would disagree with Green Bay being #10, but after reading the "why" I understand that it is cold for a good amount of time, but Appleton, which was #1 in Wisconsin is not more than 50 miles south of Green Bay.

I love my two mile route that I have mapped out around my house and feel lucky to have a great place to walk. The weather is starting to warm up and I am getting out everyday for at least a short walk. As the evenings grow warmer, I will start taking walks after dinner, but for now I am happy with my lunch time walks and short walks around the block.

What Would You Do?

Today, I judged a Forensics Tournament for Junior High Students. I had a great time. For the first round, I was the timer for Impromptu Speaking and for the power round, I judged Demonstration. It was round two that got me down. I was a standby judge and waited in the Judges' Room until I knew I was not needed. When the second round began and everyone was settled, I decided to eat lunch. Judges receive a FREE lunch ticket. How could I pass it up. The choices were this: Main course of either Nachos or a slice of Papa John's Pizza, Side dish of either assorted candy bars, assorted chips, assorted cookies.

What would you pick to eat with these limited options?

Several of the judges decided to go out for lunch at local restaurants after finding out the choices. The other judge from my daughters school decided to trade his lunch ticket in for a soda instead of the food.

I was amazed at how many judges actually passed on the lunch. After looking at them, it seemed to be all the judges that were at a healthy weight. One particular guy stuck out as he was a standby judge in the second round as well. He chose to sit and play on his cell phone the entire time only getting up to get lunch. He get his free lunch, but also bought an extra slice of pizza. That would have totally been me last year.

Well, I'll tell you that I picked a slice of pizza. Beggars can't be choosers. I was hungry. I also got a side of cookies. Grandma's Peanut Butter Cookies had been one of my snacks of choice from the vending machine. Even before eating them, I realized they were not the best choice anymore. I did enjoy my lunch and then decided to make a wise choice. Since I had an hour and a half to burn, I went for a walk. I decided that since today was March 1, I would put my Winter coat away and pull out my Spring coat. Call me crazy, but 30 degrees in March somehow feels warmer than 30 degrees in December. I was plenty warm and took an hour walk around the outside of the school. In an hour, I walked over 8,000 steps making my walk over 4 miles. So even though I made a poor choice eating my FREE lunch, I do feel that I made up for it with my exercise today.

Dairy Diet

Eating More Dairy Can Help You Lose More Weight? I was watching the Discovery Health Channel last night and saw the show, "The Truth about Food." One of the stories was about a study done in Denmark. I was amazed to see the results. Maybe there is a good reason that Weight Watchers recommends two servings of dairy each day. I have not been very good at this guideline, but now that I know consuming more dairy will help me keep my weight off I may be more apt to have that yogurt in the morning.

I'll be looking for the series again as there was another interesting story about Kids and Food. I was a little too tired to stay up for that, but did hear that children will usually try a food 30 times before refusing it altogether. They did a study with positive peer pressure and eating vegetables. I know my children are much better at eating their veggies now that we have put a priority on it. Actually, my 6 yr. old will often ask for seconds on veggies, but nothing else!

I'm a Yogi

After watching "The Biggest Loser" this week and reading Workout Mommy's post about yoga, I tried it. I wasn't expecting much, but she promised that I'd have sweat running down my back just by doing the simple Sun Salutation. I tried two rounds of the moves and at the end, I didn't have sweat running down my back, but I could definitely feel that my heart rate definitely was faster than before and I did feel like I had just done a workout.

Last week, I had to laugh at work when a co-worker did the same series of moves during a presentation on India. She demonstrated the Sun Salutation and at the end stated that she was sweating. Little did I know it was such a workout.

What a great way to start the day! If you haven't tried yoga, give it a whirl. I'll be adding the sun salutation to my early morning routine.

Sweet Treat
WOW! Someone on the WW message boards mentioned adding two packets of splenda and a teaspoon of cinnamon to some 94% ff popcorn. It was delicious. Something I've been missing is sweetness to go along with crunch and this did the trick. I probably should use this new treat with caution as it is definitely addicting.

Week 39: Reached my Goal!

I entered my weight today into the Weight Watcher Weight Tracker and received this message:
YOU DID IT! YOU'VE ACHIEVED YOUR GOAL WEIGHT!

All of us here at Weight Watchers congratulate you on reaching your ultimate weight goal. Well done. This is a fantastic achievement and we hope you'll take a moment to reflect on all that you've accomplished before doing something special to celebrate.

Now that you've reached this important milestone, you move onto the next phase—maintenance.

Maintenance means "keeping your weight steady" and you do this by sustaining your current activity level and eating a bit more food until you find the right balance.

Week 39: 189.4
Last Week: 192
Progress: Down 2.6
Starting Weight: 270.2
Total Weight Loss: 81.8
Average Weekly Loss: 2.1

I weighed in a day early and got to celebrate with a whole new group of Weight Watchers. What an awesome accomplishment! The leader of the Tuesday night group was so energetic and included me into the group like I had been there every week. She had a great personality and the meeting really was fun. I may have to attend another one of her meetings soon. Unfortunately, Tuesdays don't work well for me since I have choir practice. I skipped tonight to make it to a WW meeting this week. I am glad I did!

At our meeting tonight, we were asked to give tips on: How to gain weight! We got a good list of 20-30 things within 2 minutes. Eat dessert at every meal, fast food everyday, no exercise and my favorite and something I used to do: eat a big bag of Dorito's while watching "The Biggest Loser." The meeting topic was habits and how we learn habits. If we learn a habit, we will miss it. I would miss my daily exercise, fruits and veggies and definitely would miss planning my breakfast and lunch as to give me the most points for the evening.

The WW message states to reflect on my accomplishment before celebrating. I will do so and reflect on a great journey so far.
